We went to visit our friend Kristine’s beautiful Dexter Iris collection in Deming the other weekend. The iris garden is on her family’s beautiful and tranquil blueberry farm in the country and we had a wonderful day admiring all of the iris that she sells to the public for a few weekends each May. After they bloom, she gathers the rhizomes and mails them to her customers. She inherited the garden from her aunt, who inherited it from Marie Ingersoll when Stan Dexter became ill. Stan Dexter started the 1 acre field almost 50 years ago and was responsible for growing over 400 varieties of iris, many of which he created and hybridized. The flowers are registered with the American Iris Society. There is a wonderful “stump house”near the field that their ancestor built in the late 1800’s out of a large stump and legend has it that he actually lived in it for a time. Ask to see it if you get the chance. The iris garden makes a wonderful spring afternoon outing in the country and Kristine is doing a wonderful job of keeping his passion for iris going.
